Claddagh Credit Union Installs 24/7 Public Defibrillator at Mainguard Street Branch

Claddagh Credit Union has taken a significant step to improve community safety with the installation of a new Automated External Defibrillator (AED) outside its Mainguard Street branch in Galway city.

This publicly accessible device will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, offering vital emergency support in the event of sudden cardiac arrest. Located in one of Galway’s busiest areas, the defibrillator represents a commitment by Claddagh Credit Union to care not only for the financial well-being of its members but also for their health and well-being.

Thirteen people in Ireland suffer cardiac arrests every day, with average ambulance response times reaching 28 minutes. Access to a defibrillator within the first 10 minutes can dramatically increase the chances of survival.

“Every year in Ireland, 5,000 people lose their lives to cardiac arrest. The only way we can improve survival rates is by increasing access to defibrillators and ensuring high-quality CPR within our communities. This defibrillator is part of a growing network across Galway, helping make it Ireland’s first and only ‘4-Minute City’, where no matter where you are, you’re never more than four minutes away from a life-saving device.”— James Reihill, Director of Smart Medical

Ted Coyle, Deputy CEO of Claddagh Credit Union, emphasised the organisation’s broader mission:

“At Claddagh Credit Union, we are dedicated not only to supporting our members financially, but also looking after the well-being of our wider community. By making the defibrillator available 24 hours a day, we hope to provide reassurance and potentially save lives in an emergency.”

The public is encouraged to familiarise themselves with the location of the AED and how to use it in the event of an emergency.
