Ticket Scams – Summer Events

26 June, 2024
As major summer events approach, we urge everyone to stay vigilant against ticket scams. High-demand events, such as Taylor Swift and Coldplay concerts, are prime targets for scammers.

How ticket scams work: Target: Depending on the popularity of the artist, the likelihood that their tickets would be sold out within minutes. This urgency drives fans to becoming desperate, such as overpaying or searching social media sites including Facebook for available tickets. Scammers exploits these heightened emotions and the desperation of fans to their advantage.

Timing of Scams: Ticket frauds typically occur at two key times: when concert tickets first go on sale and as the event date approaches. During these periods, those who missed the initial sale become more frantic in their search for tickets, making them prime targets for scammers.

Fake Advertisements: To deceive victims, scammers go to the extent to create fake advertisements, posts, or listings on social media. These often include enticing offers like discounts or VIP access, luring desperate fans into their traps.

Upfront Payment: Scammers frequently demand upfront payments to secure the tickets. Once the payment is made, victims find themselves both out of money and without the tickets they were promised.

What can I do to best protect myself this summer?

Purchase from Reputable Sources: Only purchase tickets from reliable sources such as the venue’s box office, the event promoter, official agents, or well-known ticket exchange sites like Ticketmaster.

Avoid Bank Transfers: Avoid paying with electronic funds transfer or prepaid cards. Use reputable payment providers such as PayPal or use Visa/Mastercard debit or credit card.

Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Offers: Be cautious of emails, texts, or ads offering “too good to be true” ticket deals. If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.

What do I do if I think I have fallen for this Scam?

If you think you have fallen to a ticket scam, report it to your bank and Gardaí immediately.
